Host City Agreement signed for International Children’s Games 2022

Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader, Coventry City Council and Torsten Rasch, President of International Children’s Games completed the signing that marks the agreement of the rules and values for the Games that will take place in Coventry from 11 – 16 August 2022.  

Coventrian and athlete from the 2006 International Children’s Games, Rowena Cole and Paralympian, Mandip Sehmi, attended the Launch to talk about their experience of sport and physical activity as a young person in Coventry. 

The athletes spoke of how sport can improve wellbeing both mentally and physically and they encouraged athletes to get involved in the chance to compete with Team Coventry and potentially nationally going forward with future International Children's Games.  

Shortly after, the International Children’s Games Committee, Coventry City Council’s Leader and Deputy Leader, the athletes, Coventry’s Young Ambassadors and City Hosts along with other Councillors and event partners, gathered for a photo on Coventry Building Society Arena’s pitch to complete the signing. 

The week-long event in August, just three days after the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, will place focus on sustainability and a ‘greener’ Games while ensuring inclusivity throughout, by including disability sport for the first time in its history.  

Coventry’s International Children’s Games (ICG 2022) will be the 54th Games after the event was last hosted in the city of Ufa, Russia in 2019. 

ICG 2022 is a major international event, approved by the International Olympic Committee that will host seven sports: athletics, basketball 3 on 3, climbing, football 6 a side, swimming, table tennis and tennis. 

Almost 2,000 children aged 12-15 years will be flying from cities all over the world with their teams to compete in the Games. 

Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Events at Coventry City Council, said: 

“It was an absolute honour to be in the presence of the International Children’s Games President at the Launch yesterday to sign the Host City Agreement. 

“It really feels like Coventry is officially part of the International Children’s Games family once again. It was great to have some of the city’s athletes who competed both in the Games itself and in the Paralympics representing Great Britain. They are a credit to the city and are a perfect example of how the Games can be a catalyst for the children’s sporting careers. Especially now that Coventry’s Games will host disability sport too. 

“It will be a brilliant event in our calendar of major events and one that I am really looking forward to.” 

The International Children's Games is being delivered by Coventry City Council, in partnership with Coventry University, the University of Warwick and CV Life. MLS is the event management company working with key stakeholders and partners.
